• Miss Mary Mack Considers God

    Tyree Daye

    Fall 2019

No fence at most plantations, I still watch

what I sing, but I sing.

I think God must be a field full of caws.

    I know God can’t have a man’s eyes
against a small body. There are no fences
because to run is to die, they must fly from here.

I think if God is a white man he sits low in his chair
    and won’t but only sometimes
make eye contact with the angels.

Tyree Daye, author of River Hymns, is a poet from Youngsville, North Carolina, and most recently was awarded a 2019 Whiting Writers Award.
