    with the hoyer’s creaks

    while daddy sinks
    to the mattress
    for you 
    I’ve asked mamma
    thousands of days
    times each day
    night routine sets in
    I find her
    rolling the sling
    from under his
    behind I await
    reply & am always
    slow to take no
    answer as one
    the kettle cries out
    I am ready!
    for nothing really
    worth needing
    I can provide
    hot water, a plain
    mug, which I have

    Cate Lycurgus’s poetry has appeared or is forthcoming in Best American Poetry, American Poetry Review, Ploughshares, Kenyon Review, and elsewhere. She has also received scholarships from Bread Loaf and Sewanee Writers’ Conferences. Cate lives in San Jose, California, where she interviews for 32 Poems and teaches professional writing.     I do not remember anything in the room beyond its oversized desk, the squeaking chair he tipped to the wall, and the straight-backed chair I took before him. No. That’s not right. I remember that dust motes sifted the air. That the leaded panes of the window broke the sky into pieces. I remember feeling small.
      He asked, “When are you going to fuck me?”

    We recently learned that Malerie Willens's story, “Scandalous Women in History,” published in the Fall 2018 issue of the Sewanee Review, won a Pushcart Prize. Willens’s story is about a woman who stumbles into a job at a makeup counter at Saks and finds her way back to life.

    For me, characters are often generated from place. The protagonist materialized amid the sensual details of Chinatown. This setting induced a sense of hyperreality into the process of composition along with the potential for anything to happen. This is the perfect place for the narrating persona (and the writer) to be.
