    Later, after the bid, the subtle love/hate
    rules, the battle via the hotel bed
    (the veritable feast, the tolerable thud),
    I felt better able to have at the hurdles.
    After the trouble, all the heaviest debt
    traveled sub-heartbeat. I left the hotel.

    The Gravestone and the Commode

    Twenty-five years ago, when my family moved to Waterville, Maine, we bought a house with a finished basement that was sectioned off into a laundry room and a rec room. The latter seemed like the best place for my office, so I soon interred myself there, setting up my desk and computer and half a dozen bookcases below ground in a windowless room, where it would be quiet and I wouldn’t be underfoot (though I was, of course, literally under the feet of my wife and daughters).

    If 1863 was a year in which perverseness and disobedience characterized American life, one could certainly say the same of 2020. At my Thanksgiving table, I’ll be offering gratitude that this year is quickly coming to an end and that another, hopeful year is beginning, with promises of a vaccine to heal us and a new administration in Washington that promises to do the same.

    I am convinced that the magic of AWP is the persistent and necessary reminder that there are so many of us, and so many others writing and reading; the most unexpected and fun literary conversations—spanning in subject from Homer to Patricia Pollaco’s and Allen Say’s children’s books—I had were with my Uber drivers.
