    Rachel Rinehart

    Winter 2024

    Suddenly, it is night
    and the technician
    is holding not a wand
    but her leather marks
    and plummet.

    Still, we see only static,
    only mist roiling
    over the horizon,
    where maybe you are

    a soft light in shadows.
    Row closer, my child,
let me kiss the slip of you,
    your little body unmade
    in its making.

Rachel Rinehart's poetry collection The Church in the Plains was selected by Peter Everwine as the winner of the 2016 Philip Levine Poetry Prize and was published by Anhinga Press in 2018. She lives in Grayson, Kentucky, with her husband and children.
